Rocky Mountain: The Back Way

August 30, 2018

Did you know there are two roads at Rocky Mountain that travel to the Alpine Visitor Center and the highest points in the park? The main road leading to the top of the park is the Trail Ridge Road. However, the first road that led to the top of the park - the Old Fall River Road - is still in operation today.

The Old Fall River Road opened in 1920. It is unpaved, mostly gravel, and is a one-way (uphill only) road. There are no guard rails on the road and it's slow going - the speed limit is 15 miles per hour. However, it's a great alternative to the sometimes busy Trail Ridge Road for those who are up for a little adventure.
