Yellowstone: A New Record

A few months ago, we posted on Steamboat Geyser at Yellowstone National Park. Steamboat Geyser, the world's tallest active geyser, is not a geyser that erupts with any regularity. It can go decades without erupting. Earlier this year, however, Steamboat began erupting. It was still not on a regular schedule, but it was erupting often enough that it was remarkable.

On Saturday (December 8), Steamboat Geyser erupted for the 30th time in 2018, setting a new record for

the number of eruptions it has had in a single year. The previous record of 29 eruptions happened in 1964.

With over two weeks left in 2018, there is a decent chance Steamboat Geyser will erupt again this year, breaking its own record. And, perhaps, the eruptions will continue into 2019 - or maybe the geyser will once again stop erupting, as it has so many times in its past.
