Can You See the Washington Monument from Shenandoah National Park?

From the Thorofare Mountain Overlook along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, it is only 75 miles to the Washington Monument. For years, rumors persisted that, on a clear day, you could see the Washington Monument from the overlook.

For many years, the National Park Service dismissed those rumors as just that - rumors.

It turns out, some rumors are true.

In November 2016, a father and son were at the Thorofare Mountain Overlook on a clear day, and in the distance, they spotted a familiar obelisk: the Washington Monument. They snapped pictures and sent them off to the National Park Service.

At this distance, the Washington Monument is not exactly clear from the park, but especially at night, there is little doubt about what that tall object is in the distance.

If you happen to be at Shenandoah National Park on a particularly clear day or night, make a stop at the Thorofare Mountain Overlook. Perhaps you, too, will catch a glimpse of the Washington Monument.
